FAQs FOR PROSTATE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION

What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is enlargement of the prostate gland which can lead to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), which include urinary frequency, inability to urinate, incomplete emptying of bladder, difficulty starting urination, and straining to urinate or weak urine stream.
Can Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia be Cured?

Prostate Artery Embolization has been shown to relieve the symptoms of BPH. It is clinically shown to reduce the major lower urinary tract symptoms of BPH, PAE has become a viable alternative to surgical procedures. PAE has a very low rate of urinary incontinence or sexual dysfunction like impotence and retrograde ejaculation, complications sometimes occurring after traditional prostate surgery.

Who Treats Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?

Non-surgical treatment options are usually performed by an interventional radiologist.

How is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Diagnosed?
More than 50% of all men in their 60s and as many as 90% aged 70-89 years old have some symptoms of BPH. Black and Hispanic men are at a higher risk.
Can Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Cause Constipation?
Although it is an uncommon symptom, constipation can be caused by an enlarged prostate.

Meet Dr. Handley

Dr. Robert Handley, a top vascular physician in the DFW area, has been a practicing Interventional Radiologist for almost two decades and has a passion for providing minimally invasive treatments for common conditions that might otherwise require major surgery. He has been in the DFW area for more than 10 years and has been performing minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins, uterine fibroids, peripheral vascular disease, and other conditions, now including treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

Treatment For Enlarged Prostate – PAE

PAE is an outpatient procedure that typically takes 1-2 hours. It is done in an Office Based Lab (OBL) which is part of the physicians office. Patients are given mild IV sedation to help them relax, but remain awake. A small catheter is inserted into the upper thigh after administering local anesthetic to the area. The catheter is then guided using real time X-ray to the small arteries that supply blood to the prostate. Small particles are then injected through the catheter into these vessels, shutting off the blood supply. This reduces the size of the prostate and the pain associated with an inability to pass urine. After the procedure, patients are discharged from the office the same day. You should begin to see relief of painful symptoms in 1-2 weeks.

What Exactly Is PAE?

Prostate Artery Embolization is a minimally invasive treatment option for Benign Prostatic Hyperpasia (bph). The procedure involves the injection of small spherical gel like particles into the prostate arteries which are responsible for supplying blood to your prostate. These particles limit the blood flow to the prostate, which causes it to slowly shrink and thus reduce the pressure experienced around the urethra.

Am I a Good Candidate for Prostate Artery Embolization?

If you are experiencing symptoms and you wish to avoid surgical removal of a portion of your prostate (TURP) then you may be a great candidate for this procedure. Additionally, those prostrwho have already exhausted more conservative treatments like medication may find relief with prostate artery embolization.
