Varicose vein disease appears as twisting, “rope like” cords of bulging veins under the skin. These veins are responsible for returning blood to the heart. These veins have to work against gravity and contain tiny valves to help push the blood upwards. These valves close and prevent blood from “reversing flow” back down the leg. When valves start to malfunction, blood does not completely empty out of the veins and it starts to “collect” or “pool” inside the veins. A patient is determined to have venous insufficiency if they experience inadequate venous drainage.
The vein may feel tender to the touch or numb. As you age, varicose veins can form because the wear and tear on the valves can cause blood to pool and not flow smoothly. Vein pain and other symptoms can worsen after sitting or standing for a long time, on warm days, at the end of the day, and some women experience worse symptoms during their menstrual cycle or during pregnancy.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
For patients with venous insufficiency or varicose veins, radiofrequency (RF) ablation is a minimally invasive procedure performed at North Texas Vein and Vascular that treats the veins with radiofrequency energy which causes them to close.
Endovenous laser ablation is a process by which we close a malfunctioning vein which is causing a patient’s symptoms of venous insufficiency. By closing the malfunctioning vein, we reroute the blood to the deep veins and this allows there not to be blood pooling in the lower extremities. The pooling effect is a primary cause for most of the patient’s symptoms. The way that we close the veins with a laser is by putting a small iv catheter into the vein, and then we put a little laser fiber out the tip of the catheter. Then after we put some dilute lidocaine called tumescent anesthesia around the vein. We turn the laser on, then pull it back slowly which seals the vein shut.
If varicose veins are suspected, your doctor will perform an ultrasound examination using a device that allows visualization of the blood vessels, their size and shape, and characteristics of blood flow. He will “map” out the vessels in order to find the problematic areas. Treatment options for varicose veins include:
